Preston Park resident’s parking – The public consultation

Letter published in The Argus

I write regarding the current public consultation about the introduction of a parking scheme in the Preston Park Station area.

Residents’ parking is a good idea. Who wouldn’t want a virtual guarantee of a space in their street? However, for Brighton and Hove City Council to charge for the privilege seems unreasonable.

As council taxpayers to a unitary authority, is it not the case that a percentage of that money should already cover costs for highways, transport, traffic, urban roads and onand off-street parking? If so, why are residents being charged more than £100 a year for such schemes?

If an annual fee is the eventual outcome of the consultation I believe each household should be issued one free parking permit. Any costs for running such a scheme could be met by households with more than one car, after all, the Preston Park Station area is a haven for landlords renting out property to multiple tenants.

Hopefully, it would also force multiple-vehicle owners to rethink their current set-up.

It’s fairly obvious the council is keen to make additional revenue from local transport.

Perhaps if fares and parking schemes were fair and justified, the needs of local people would be better served.
